“Fahrenheit 9/11”
Just a few years later, “Fahrenheit 9/11” would not have seemed nearly as explosive. But rushed into theaters at the height of the Iraq War, smack dab in the middle of the Bush administration, Michael Moore’s incendiary indictment of the military-industrial complex was a condemnation of the here-and-now—and an impassioned call for a grass-roots uprising against the status quo. Mocking the ambivalent attitudes of an administration he considered warmongers, deriding their rhetoric over the “war on terror,” questioning the brutal interrogation techniques being employed on the front lines and debunking the evidence compiled in a rush to war, Moore’s film was proudly one-sided in both its facts and outrage. As a result, opening night became a political event.
