1990s
"My cult status keeps me alive," sings 1990s' Jackie McKeown on the band’s debut album…and it's more or less true. It's a shame to say, but we actually don't think this band are gonna hit it big. And that's a good thing, provided you like sweaty, fun club shows as much as we do. Like Art Brut before them, the Scottish trio is pretty much destined to be remembered for that one awesome (and awesomely funny) album—"Cookies" is an instantly accessible, giddy power-pop party record, hooky and delicious and hilarious. Strangely, considering the lyrical content (think drugs, sex, and more drugs) its appeal is surprisingly enduring—even after a few dozen listens, it hasn't outworn its welcome.

Then there's the Franz Ferdinand association to contend with. Though two of the band members were in a group called Yummy Fur with Franz singer Alex Kapranos, 1990s actually have more in common with the likes of influential (and under the influence) Brit-poppers Supergrass than their angular, postpunk brethren. All of which means the band is likely to keep their self-celebrated cult status—enjoy it while it lasts.
