It was announced Friday that Beautiful: The Carole King Musical will begin performances in spring of next year, following a pre-Broadway engagement this fall. Like other jukebox tributes, this one will showcase the classic tunes that King co-wrote with her (now former) husband Gerry Goffin, as well as songs by another famously creative couple, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil.Yet another baby-boomer pop icon is about to be honored on Broadway.

A press release describes the show as telling "the inspiring true story of King's rise to stardom," tracing the journey of "a Brooklyn girl with passion and chutzpah" who "fought her way into the record business as a teenager," though "it wasn't until her fairy-tale life began to crack that she finally managed to find her true voice."

The book will be written by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Douglas McGrath (Emma, Bullets Over Broadway). A cast and other creative team members will be announced shortly.
