Island music
So “Lost” is over until 2009. But never fear: Local fans Jeff Curtin and Adam Schatz keep the show’s spirit alive through music. Their group, Previously on Lost, condenses past episodes of the hit series into complex pop songs, which the duo refers to as (sigh) “recap-rock.” Before the group’s live recap of season 4 this Sunday at the Knitting Factory, we spoke with Curtin on their obsession with the show and how it relates to music (hey, maybe they could play their songs in 4-8-15-16-23-42 time! Ha! Eh…).

How do you guys start doing Previously on Lost?

We thought about writing a “Lost”-themed musical during the third season, but at that time we were working on a sci-fi ballet called “Champollion” and didn't have time. This season we decided it would better to recap each episode as the season moves along so that, at the end, we would have told the full tale of season 4 and the Oceanic Six. And what a tale it is...

Are you musicians who happen to be fans of “Lost,” or rabid fans of “Lost” who happen to play instruments?

Our main interest is in recapping. In order to recap successfully, you have to be familiar with the subject you aim to sum up. Since we have watched every episode of "Lost" multiple times and have been with it since season 1, we decided it was a good place to start. We have a variety of music projects going on right now between the two of us. We plan to widen the scope of our recapping to include other J.J. Abrams shows beginning with “Felicity” and move from there to books, movies, restaurant menus and weeks in politics.

What kind of "Lost" experiences can we expect at your live show?

Aside from fog and strobes, the live show will feature the main events of the show such as plane crashes, dangerous surgery, childbirth (if anyone dares, we welcome it), crowd surfing in zodiacs. There will be giveaways and leis, and it'll generally feel like a luau. We have a seven-piece band and more special guests to assist us in telling this epic tale.

I notice Matthew Fox is one of your top friends on MySpace. Does he know what you guys do?

I'm not sure. We were invited to talk with Michael Emerson, who plays Ben, on the public radio show "Fair Game,” and he likes our production quality. Other than that, we haven't been aware of cast members keeping up with our songs. Many of the MySpace pages for characters online are just shells of the true character, and certainly not the actor themselves behind the curtain. So really I guess we're just friends with someone's notion of Matthew Fox being hot. That's what that means. And we like being friends with notions!

Nikki and Paulo from Season 3…did they get a song?

Nope. They're deadskies.

What was the hardest episode to write a song about?

Episode No. 10 from this season was hard because so much happened and we had to fit a lot in to stay true to the primary objective: the recap. But there was a lot of pill-popping and ghost-seeing, so we decided to focus on that. “Gotta Take Your Meds!” was the song. Episodes that produced songs like "Constant" or "Ballad of Sayid Jarrah" were easier because they had focused themes and those songs become favorites.

What's the most vexing question for you guys regarding the show's plotlines (i.e. where is the island? Where’s Walt?)

Well, we try to not ask too many questions...although we imagine that the castaways are really just on some lesser island off of Hawaii that no one knows about, or in the “Truman Show” dome and just don't know it yet. As for Walt, well they can only show him in windows from down below now because his legs have grown too long and it would look weird if he stood next to Locke. I hear Walt is now 8 feet tall. If he was still on the island, he could pick coconuts for everyone. And Dharma brand coconuts would go under.

So when you're not "Lost"-ing out, what do you guys do?

Adam is a sax major at NYU and organizes a few concert series around the city, including Zombieville and a jazz series at the Knitting Factory. I do the sound for Pitchfork TV, a new Internet TV site devoted to covering indie music. Otherwise we enjoy the cookie boxes you can buy at Staples, and lounging in our respective Brooklyn mansions.
