Mussels
If you're looking for the city's best-kept secret, sink your teeth into some Mussels. The Brooklyn four-piece self-released the propulsive debut LP "Little Voices" earlier this year to, well, not much notice (though it'll surely land atop at least one critic's year-end list). Somebody get these guys a publicist! Reminiscent of all the best indie-rock bands out there, they've got the ringing guitars of Built to Spill, the baroque organ of Wolf Parade, and the scrappily melodic appeal of Modest Mouse, but they've got just as solid a signature sound as any of those bands.

With a two-pronged songwriting attack (singer-guitarists Brandon Lenihan and John Niccoli honed their chops in their previous band tincantelephone), there's not a stinker in the bunch, and each song is chockablock with ideas, careening from one unbelievably catchy part to the next. The band recently opened for self-made indie stars Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, and we can only hope for a similar level of success for Mussels.
