Q&A: Girl Talk

It says something about a live performer when he can get the universally grumpy (and canary yellow polo shirt loving) security guards to not just crack a smile, but shake they asses. Girl Talk's Gregg Gillis did just this with his sweaty Friday afternoon set of A.D.D. mashups from his latest mixtape, "Feed The Animals" —Daft Punk, Sinead O'Connor, Queen and Kelly Clarkson all showed up in the mix. As did Radiohead ("Paranoid Android vs. Jay-Z's "Roc Boys (And the Winner Is"), which was sorta an easy sell given the Thom Yorke as deity crowd).  Plus a kid on stage—one of 120 cute college sophomores—played air saxophone during an obvious guitar part, which was sorta cute too! Girl Talk, you may have stolen the show on day one. We caught up with him the next day.

So you played a really hot show yesterday. The venue seemed to work really well.
This show and Lollapalooza last weekend was great. In preparation we tossed around a lot of ideas on how to be interactive. I love to get in the crowd, but it's hard to do because I have a job up there on stage. My friends came through with all that toilet paper and confetti and big balloons.

Where did you get the props?
We took a cab to Target and spent about 300 bucks on shit. The employees were really pumped that somebody came in to buy 75 beach balls and 300 rolls of toilet paper. We told them that it was going to be a sick pool party. We're going to take some of this for our next US club tour.

What sets have you been able to catch?

Animal Collective today. They were great. It's exciting when weirder music can be heard on a grand level. That's going to be some Radiohead shit in ten years. Yesterday I saw CSS. They were fantastic.

Did you see Radiohead?

Yeah, it was my first time seeing them. I'm not the most-hardcore fan but the show was very cool. They are the Pink Floyd of our times.

But you're not a fan?

After they released "The Bends" I got into a different style of music. It's always on the radar but it's not something I am dying to hear.

When you tour, do you roll with a large crew?
Last year it was me, my girlfriend and Dan Deacon in a Honda Accord for three months. But this upcoming tour we are going to bring some friends to do sound and the visuals. And to hang out for a month and a half.
