Robbers On High Street
There is no denying that when Robbers frontman Ben Trokan sings he sounds a lot like Spoon’s Britt Daniel: a man’s man sorta voice, very warm and maybe not the best match for the Trokan’s whimsical character sketches found en mass on the new album, “Grand Animals." (“The Ramp” imagines a young boy, on the brink of death, meeting Leonardo DiCaprio for a meet-and-greet. Looks like somebody’s been listening to Ben Folds).

A band for just over five years, Robbers has suffered a couple unplanned roster changes (becoming a threesome overnight), but has overcome with an album packed with some serious instruments (see above) and production (Italian composer Daniele Luppi running the studio). “Kick ‘em in the Shins,” the album’s standout cut, rides piano loops and a catchy groove right into a fuzzed-out, stoned-out guitar solo. Very Britt Daniel, come to think of it.
