Rosebuds
By the time you read this, Rosebuds might have switched genres again. The North Carolina band issued their debut album in 2003, "The Rosebuds Make Out," a collection of bright, kicky power-pop tunes. For the follow-up, "Birds Make Good Neighbors," they upped the sophistication factor, making a more mature, restrained (and way less hooky) album. They've taken the sonic journey even further this time out, with "Night of the Furies." (Suddenly the band, now pared down to the duo of Ivan Howard and Kelly Crisp, with a little help from their friends, has unexpectedly morphed into an almost unrecognizable, bizarro version of themselves.

In this world they're a new-wave dance band, all slinky synth lines and drum-machine beats. Every once in a while, though, through the dark hazy atmospherics, there'll be a glimpse of the indie-pop band at the core: a hand clap here, a singalong chorus there. If the indie kids haven't figured out how to dance by now, they just might learn at the Rosebuds show.
