The buzz: After years of touring and a few bootleg releases, Hank Williams III’s metal band, Assjack, releases its first official album. Note to country fans: Stay far, far away.

The verdict: Anyone familiar with Hank III’s solo work knows the man’s got the right (read: dark) temperament for metal. And it’s not like he’s playing musical tourist here; when not on tour, Williams is the bassist in Phil Anselmo’s heavier-than-Pantera side project Superjoint Ritual. So while “Assjack” isn’t the most original headbanger, it is full of big riffs, a nice touch of Southern boogie (see “Gravel Pit”), not too much of the standard Cookie Monster growl, and an appropriately evil disposition (sample lyrics: “F--- you, motherf-----!”; “Mar-eee-juannnna!”). Call it Slayer by way of Skynyrd.

Did you know? The real way to see Assjack is live; Williams divides his set into different sections, starting with a psych-country set, moving into sped-up rockabilly and ending with a room-clearing 45 minutes of Assjack material (Ministry/Slayer covers included).
