Busta Rhymes, 'Back on My B.S.'

Release date: May 19, 2009
Record label: Flipmode/Universal Motown

The buzz: It’s been three years since this inimitable, tongue-twisting rapper dropped an album, during which time he’s been in the news more for his altercations than for his music. His eighth album, “Back on My B.S.” is being touted as a return to creative form.

The verdict: While Busta is always over-the-top and energetic, there’s a great musical variety on this record that shows he’s not overly aggressive and can also handle more delicate offerings. This is particularly evident on the slow soul of “Decision,” which features Jamie Foxx, Mary J. Blige, John Legend, and Common ingeniously switching off on the chorus, and “Don’t Believe Em,” where he teams with fellow controversial stars T.I. and Akon and speaks up for the part of their lives not covered by the tabloids.

Did you know? Busta Rhymes, born Trevor Smith, was given his nickname by Public Enemy’s Chuck D in reference to former NFL player George “Buster” Rhymes.
