The buzz: A new musical project led by Brody Dalle, the former frontwoman for influential turn-of-the-century punk band the Distillers, Spinnerette also features ex-Distillers guitarist Tony Bevilacqua, guitarist Alain Johannes (founder of Eleven) and drummer Jack Irons (who’s played with Red Hot Chili Peppers, Eleven and Pearl Jam).

The verdict: Dalle is still a strong and fearless presence, but her vocals and the music here are both much more melodic and polished than in her Distillers days. She sounds equally comfortable with the gentle sway of “Baptized by Fire” as she does with a slightly nastier and more kittenish groove like on “Sex Bomb” or “Ghetto Love.” There’s an infectious playfulness as different styles are approached; “Rebellious Palpitations” even adds a touch of psychedelic rock.

Did you know? Brody Dalle is married to Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme; together, the pair have a 3-year-old daughter named Camille.
