Spoon, "Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga"
[Merge; 2007]

Backstory:
Austin's indie-rock darlings have been teetering on the edge of mainstream success for years; this album (their sixth) may be the one to push them over the edge.

Why you should care: It's pretty easy to argue this is Spoon's best album yet. The '60s-tinged jingle-bells of "You Got Yr Cherry Bomb," the horn-y arrangement of "The Underdog" and the screw-the-music-industry lyrics of "Finer Feelings" are all first-rate examples of singer/songwriter Britt Daniel truly coming into his own.

Verdict: Will the uniquely named "Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga" make Spoon a household name? Since there's no up and coming indie rock band called Fork, the outcome's pretty good—especially in houses that find Spork use ironic.

X-Factor: Revered producer Jon Brion (Beck, Tom Petty) recorded "The Underdog," giving it just enough sheen to make it a potential radio hit.
