With Demander and The Picture
June 1, 2009
When UK’s subversive Art Brut first appeared in 2005, their combination of simple, three-chord rock anthems and frontman Eddie Argos’ blunt, declarative lyrics made them both the darlings and goofballs of indie rock. Art Brut was the smart kid in the back of the classroom throwing spitballs at all the other bands in the room. Any thoughts of one-trick ponydom, though, have vanished with subsequent albums filled equally with hilarious, incisive lyrics and fist-in-the-air melodies. And boy did the fists pump at this first show of a five-night Mercury Lounge residency. Argos looked fit as a fiddle—no fatties!—as he blasted through the band’s three albums, pulling much of the set from the latest Frank Black-produced joint “Art Brut vs. Satan.” With Demander and The Picture.
