CMJ 2009: Day 5

The Almighty Defenders praise life, and free drinks, at ROOTS Studio

As a chilly rain washed away our collective hangovers, the final day ended up being one of the best. A night of the super group jam. Spanish Broads, featuring members of Das Racist, Boy Crisis and Amazing Baby, was more of a fun party band than anything. We’re not talking about Monsters of Folk here people! Almighty Defenders (Black Lips + King Khan and BBQ) played bluesy hymnals and was tamer than its parts. Dark Meat and Neon Indian (VEGA + Jessica Rabbit) also played late in Brooklyn. Earlier, Shilpa Ray hit the Stereoactive Showcase at The Delancey while New Romantics Violens stole the show at Bowery Ballroom. Drum/bass duo Sigmund Droid reminds us of DFA1979, and not just by the setup. Watch out! Also playing: Drink Up Buttercup, Local Natives, Elizabeth and the Catapult, Headlights and Dum Dum Girls. See you next year. Hima might still be drunk.
