Femi Kuti and the Positive Force
June 25, 2009
As the son of famed Afrobeat warrior Fela Kuti, probably the most revered musical and social activist in Africa, Femi Kuti has always had huge shoes to fill. He has done so with an eye to the future, collaborating with hip-hop titans like Mos Def and Common and even appearing as a DJ in the popular video game "Grand Theft Auto." And Kuti hasn't shied away from the challenge of socially aware sonics, from his 1989 debut, "No Cause For Alarm?" to this latest effort, "Day By Day," seven years in the making—which he mined from at this free Celebrate Brooklyn! show. With Melvin Gibbs' Elevated Entity.
