"Show us your hits," asks Universal Records
April 1, 2009
"Everybody step back two feet and put some pussy in front of you." Oh, that's how you know you're at a Steel Panther show. The command came from frontman Michael Starr during the band's show at the Canal Room, which served as an East Coast introduction/label showcase for the group. Formerly known as Metal Skool, the beloved Los Angeles mock glam metal group has somehow recently landed a deal with the mighty Universal Records—which means the airwaves will hopefully someday be filled with the likes of "Death to All But Metal," "There She Blows," "The Shocker" (it's what you think it's about) and "Asian Hooker."
The latter song featured a cameo from Anthrax's Scott Ian, but it was hardly the night's crowning moment. No, that award either belonged to guitarist Satchel's mind-blowing guitar solo—which incorporated every great metal riff (Van Halen! Iron Maiden! Metallica!) into one five-minute barrage—or the antics of one pretty young fan in the front row. See, in L.A., a Steel Panther show usually features a horde of groupies flashing their wares on stage. Here, we get one woman who, right after discussing her oral sex prowess with the band, proceeds to talk at length about her committed relationship, and then brings her mom up on stage to dance. Here's our command: NYC, learn how to rock.
