U2
September 23, 2009
A truly monstrous (one might say spider-like) in-the-round stage, giant video screens and shout outs to Apple, Blackberry, Matt Damon, Universal Records, the international space station, the elected leader of Burma and African AIDS prevention programs...hey, it's a U2 show! Bono and company spent most of their first of two nights at Giants Stadium preaching a mix of arena rock bombast, corporate synergy and save-the-world rhetoric. The band sounded great (though did opener Muse slightly out-wow them? Our thoughts point to yes), and the setlist was a nice mix of new stuff (highlight: "I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight") and the expected classics from "The Joshua Tree" and "Boy." Any surprises? Not really. Perfect execution of a classic sound? Pretty much. —Kirk Miller
