One of the buzz bands to come out of last year’s CMJ Festival, Jacksonville’s Black Kids write classic pop songs with killer choruses that include elements of everything from ‘80s new wave to classic R&B to cheer-squad chants. Then they sing the hell out of them with Arcade Fire-level exuberance. In case you’re wondering about the name, only two of the band’s five members are black. Lead singer Reggie Youngblood told Rolling Stone he just likes that it “seems subversive.”
