Hoboken can feel like Siberia when hoofing it out after work. And there’s a good chance you are making the journey to catch a band at Maxwell’s—sorry ‘Boken locals, every borough has its own version of frat house hell Black Bear Bar. The 200-seat rock club/restaurant is co-owned by Sonic Youth’s Steve Shelley and features flavor-of-the-month indie groups as well as big acts (Interpol, R.E.M) warming up for bigger shows in the City. Bleachers line the perimeter for choice standing space—though the best seats are upfront where the relatively small and squat stage allows fans to converse with their favorite band (or berate a bad opener if they are still grumpy about the one mile walk from the PATH station).
