SXSW in NYC
These bands made some noise in Austin...and they're coming to New York
This year’s South by Southwest music festival offered up, roughly, a
billion bands at an equal number of locations throughout Austin. As
always, there was the usual mix of surprises (2 Live Crew?!?) and
disappointments (Vampire Weekend is pleasant, nothing more), but a few
smaller bands managed to make their mark—although we somehow missed a
set a group called Swastikittens. For those who couldn’t make it down
to Texas, here’s where to catch them in town...starting with some Philly
boys known as Man Man.
It's probably safe to say you haven't seen anything like a Man Man show
(uh, unless you've seen Man Man, perhaps on the Modest Mouse tour?).
The Philadelphia band is four guys, many mustachioed, who like to dress
in white, headbands and face paint for the stage, and then proceed to
go nuts on their instruments, which may include pots and pans, squeaky
toys, noisemakers and the like in addition to more standard fare.
Musically it's a freaky-deaky carnival ride (think Captain Beefheart)
that never lingers in one spot too long. Their third collection of
kitchen-sink madness is due April 8. (April 10, Bowery Ballroom)
