Author and Punisher
Latest release: “Drone Machines” (A&P Recordings)
Who: By day, Tristan Shone works as a mechanical engineer at the University of California, San Diego’s National Center for Microscopy and Imaging Research; by night, he constructs sound-making machines in his basement, and uses them in the studio and on stage to create sludgy, droning tracks over which he distortedly sing-screams. An Author and Punisher live performance, featuring Shone’s “Drone Machines” (as he calls his industrial robot-looking creations) is like watching someone extract sound from warped exercise equipment.
What they’re saying: “If you’ve ever wondered what it must be like to inhabit the deepest depths of Hell—the underworld’s boiler room, where pedophile priests shovel serial killer brains into the burner to keep Hell’s gears moving at a steady pace—then listen to ‘Drone Machines.’” – San Diego CityBeat
What we’re saying: This is brutal, visceral music, yes, but it bears the hallmarks of an artist and a craftsman. That Shone holds an MFA in art, in addition to his mechanical engineering degree, shouldn’t surprise attentive listeners. – Keith N. Dusenberry
