Latest release: “Human Beings” (Paracadute)
Who: A new L.A.-via-Chicago electro-pop duo featuring Drea Smith (formerly of He Say She Say) on vocals and OK Go bassist Tim Nordwind on everything else. They released their six-track debut EP on Halloween digitally and on 10-inch vinyl.
What they’re saying: “Reverberating textured beats and slightly gloomy, Joy Division-style attitude…all topped off with strangely catchy hooks.” – Nylon
What we’re saying: The knockout track here is “That Ain’t Right,” a swooning goth-pop diversion that’s part Cure, part Raveonettes, part Lykke Li, and every bit as mesmerizing as that combination sounds. The rest of “Human Beings” is nearly as good, as Smith’s smoky, neo-soul vocals mesh surprisingly well with Nordwind’s artfully crafted, ‘80s-inspired arrangements. “Animal,” with its spiky New Wave guitars and “Woah-oh” backing vocals, points the way to a feistier sound for a future full-length and live show. – Andy Hermann
