Twin Sister
Latest release: “In Heaven” (Domino)
Who: This Long Island quintet, led by vocalist Andrea Estella and guitarist/vocalist Eric Cardona, emerged in 2010 with a lovely EP of bedroom dream-pop, “Color Your Life,” and a very active website—the band has posted over 100 songs, demos and snippets over the past two years. “In Heaven,” their debut full-length, arrived last fall.
What they’re saying: “An especially mature, sharp rendering of effervescent, bewitching pop.” – Stereogum (“Top 50 Albums of 2011”)
What we’re saying: A mixtape recently posted on Twin Sister’s website reveals some of the influences behind the band’s seductive sound: Sade, Erykah Badu, Massive Attack. To those elements add Estella’s exotic, Stereolab-like vocals and Cardona’s flair for evoking the quirkier elements of pre-MTV New Wave (think Blondie and Talking Heads) and you have a recipe for one of the most unusual, striking debuts in recent memory. The peppy “Saturday Sunday” and the louche Euro-funk of “Bad Street” are the best entry points. – Andy Hermann
