Emeli Sande
Latest release: “Our Version of Events” (U.S. release: June 5 on Capitol Records)
Who: A Scottish singer-songwriter who got her start writing tunes for British rappers (Chipmunk) and pop artists (Leona Lewis, Susan Boyle), Sandé is already a rising star in England, where she recently won the Critic’s Choice Award at the BRIT Awards. Everyone from Simon Cowell to Adele has praised both her stylish pop/R&B songcraft and her powerful voice.
What they’re saying: “She’s made an album that deserves to linger in the limelight--passionate, powerful and possessed of real star quality.” – Q Magazine
What we’re saying: With her unaffected, soulful delivery and gut-punch lyrics (a track about dumping a boyfriend is called “Kill the Boy”), Sandé is the clear frontrunner to follow in Adele’s footsteps as Britain’s next great musical export. “Next to Me,” with its driving piano and soul-strut groove, is the obvious, “Rolling in the Deep”–like crossover hit. Other advance tracks from her debut album, like “Daddy,” suffer a bit from some kitchen-sink over-production, but on the acoustic versions, widely available on YouTube, Sandé’s voice is a marvel. – Andy Hermann
