Editors
While Editors’ past efforts fluctuated between Ian Curtis-y mood pieces and Coldplay-ish ambitions, the U.K. band's third record “In This Light and on This Evening” marks an entirely new direction for the band, based almost wholly on drum loops and vintage synths. Live at Terminal 5 on Friday night, the new tracks took on a slightly more human edge, thanks to always exaggerated, always entertaining body twitches and facial tics of frontman Tom Smith. Sure, it was hard to dance to new tracks like "Bricks and Mortar" (which really does sound like the theme to "The Terminator," a claim the band apparently not-so-jokingly made a little while back) or the NIN, industrial dirge of "Eat Raw Meat = Blood Drool," but props to the group for continually evolving and testing new waters. And while the oldies ("Munich", "Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors") may have been easier to digest, it was a new song (the propulsive "Papillion") that triumphantly closed the night.
