Esben and the Witch | Mercury Lounge
This Brighton trio has had the British music press fawning over a sound that’s two parts Bauhaus, one part witch-house—layer upon layer of moody, distorted vocals, goth-rock melodrama and menacing, vaguely tribal beats. It’s all very creepy and arty and theatrical. Underneath it all, though, it’s hard to find any actual songs—but if you need a soundtrack for lying awake at 3 a.m. and feeling horribly misunderstood, you could do worse. With Wise Blood.
