When punk, strings and opera collide (in the round!)
While ostensibly a "hardcore" band, Fucked Up represents more than simple aggression. Sure, they offer up wall-to-wall guitars, blitzkrieg tempos and singalong choruses, usually with shirtless frontman Pink Eye barking out the lyrics in the crowd. But this is also an experimental band, one that's willing to try out 12-hour concerts (including once in NYC a few years back, with help from Moby and members of Vampire Weekend) and record four-act rock operas, as the Toronto collective did on its latest album, "David Comes to Life" (which Spin rightfully dubbed "the most epic punk album ever.") Last night, with the help of the string-based Calder Quartet, the group played the album in its entirety and in the round, creating a grand, energetic, joyfully disorienting assault on the senses. With Titus Andronicus. (Miss the show? They're playing again tonight at the Warsaw, although like last night, tickets sold out a while ago...but definitely worth hitting up Craigslist)--Kirk Miller
