Kicking off Fashion Week with NYC style icons. And a pretty good band too.
At this point, Blonde Redhead has all but lost the dissonant squalls that earned them comparisons to Sonic Youth at the start of their 14-year career. The lush, swirling dream rock heard on their seventh (and maybe best) album, “23,” now recalls shoegazers like My Bloody Valentine. (A new album—"Penny Sparkle"—drops next week. Check the stream on NPR). With the ethereal vocals of front woman Kazu Makino and the wash of guitars and electronic touches provided by twin Italian brothers Amedeo and Simone Pace, the New York trio has crafted a lovely and entrancing work. This was a party thrown at Gilt City NYC to kickoff Fashion Week.
