King Khan and the Shrines
There was a hipster gospel revival meetin' in Chinatown on Friday as King Khan and the Shrines brought their brand of holy rolling garage rock madness to Santos Party House. One part James Brown be-caped swagger and another part Tony Clifton through a Bollywood filter, the Berlin-based, nine-piece psychedelic soul outfit were wrapping up a short U.S. tour. The band's 2008 release on Vice Records, "The Supreme Genius of King Khan and the Shrines," is filled with basement party anthems, and the crowd wasn't disappointed by the generous set list, or the half-hour rage-the-stage encore. The night was a barnstorming, barefoot dancing (really, we saw shoes on the floor), sweat-filled dance party, with "special guest appearance" from hipster icon "Beans." Atlanta's Gentlemen Jesse opened the show. —Gabi Porter
