Kurt Von Stetten, 'Cyclops'
Von Stetten came to the DIY faction of music production by a circuitous route; the Boston, Mass., multi-instrumentalist was a member of several bands in the late '90s, but withdrew into his bedroom-turned-studio because of bromhidrosis—a syndrome that causes acute body odor. So, for a decade, Von Stetten was a self-taught, self-produced guitarist and drummer—and a prolific one, at that. "Cyclops" marks his sixth album in so many years, second since he emerged from seclusion and joined a label. Though he's technically gone mainstream, the songwriter hasn't abandoned his tendencies to have his hand on all aspects of the recording process—so that's him on guitar, bass, banjo, harmonica, etc. "Cyclops" looks to branch out into less poppy waters than last year's "Pyramid," with more of a garage rock-influence. –LM
