Big Gigantic, 'Nocturnal'
Here’s something you don’t hear every day: a mish-mash of jazz, hip-hop, funk and dubstep, punctuated by melodic blasts of saxophone. That’s the sound concocted by Big Gigantic, a Boulder, Colo., duo who have been making a name for themselves on the same electro-jam circuit frequented by such oddball dance music acts as the Disco Biscuits, Bassnectar and STS9. Most listeners will probably find Big Gigantic’s sound either thrillingly original or jarringly discordant, especially when Dominic Lalli’s sax creeps into the mix like a signal from the world’s weirdest smooth jazz station. But if you like your tunes simultaneously “soulful” and “bass-rattling” (as the Los Angeles Times put it), Big Gigantic might blow your mind. –AH
