Fauna, 'Manshines'
Argentinean label ZZK Records has been one of the leading lights in the so-called “digital cumbia” scene—a fusion of electronic music with the rhythms and melodies of Latin American folk. For years, the label’s music has been hard to come by in the states, at least in physical form. But thanks to a new partnership with Waxploitation, the indie label that launched Danger Mouse, ZZK titles are finally going to start showing up in American record stores on a more regular basis. Among the first: “Manshines,” the latest album from ZZK’s first signing, Fauna. It’s a cutting edge mix of digital cumbia, tropical dubstep, kuduro (an African style of electronic dance music popular in Angola and Portugal), electro-reggae and at least a few genres no one’s coined names for yet. –AH
