The Little Willies, 'For the Good Times'
Six years ago, a group of New York City musicians released an album of old country and western covers—which would’ve been no big deal, except that one of the musicians happened to be Norah Jones. This follow-up set continues in a similar vein, offering up affectionate renditions of songs from artists like Loretta Lynn (“Fist City”), Kris Kristofferson (the teardrop-in-my-beer title track), Johnny Cash (“Wide Open Road”) and Ralph Stanley (“I Worship You”). Jones is clearly the star, especially on a restrained reading of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,” but co-lead vocalist Richard Julian more than holds his own and the rest of the Willies, led by guitarist Jim Campilongo, give the whole album a dusty roadhouse vibe that’s more East Texas than East Village. Good times, indeed. –AH
