OMD
OMD? OMG! Last night, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark returned to New York for the first time in 23 years. OMG! New wavers rejoiced and busted out the hair gel—don't think we didn't! In grand synth-pop style, the band delivered a thrashing performance full of arm swinging and pogo dancing, with a long set list full of deep catalog cuts and crowd-pleasing guilty pleasures.
Best known by casual listeners in the US as the band responsible for the epic prom song "If You Leave"—featured at the end of "Pretty in Pink"—lead singer Andy McCluskey introduced the song as the "song that ruined our careers." Even with smattering of tracks from their 2010 release "History of Modern" there was plenty of the early-‘80's classics—there was enough "Tesla Girls" and "Enola Gay" to please everyone. On our way out of the club we overheard a fan sum up the night perfectly: "If you're going to take 23-years off, you better be that good when you come back." Yes we also dropped by soundcheck earlier in the day to hang out with all the uber-fans (as we raise our hands sheepishly). With Oh Land. Were you snapped?
