A trendy alt-rock sound from the L.A.-based duo
Of all the critters you can name your indie band after, rabbits are definitely trendy—you’ve got your White Rabbits, your Bad Rabbits, your Gram Rabbit, your Frightened Rabbit. So how does the New Orleans-bred, L.A.-based duo Pepper Rabbit stand out from their bunny brethren? With a sound that hops from Flaming Lips-like, spaced-out psych-rock to jaunty, Supertrampian power-pop, with a few nibbles of grandiose chamber-pop along the way. It’s a sound even trendier than rabbits—more than occasionally, these songs are indistinguishable from MGMT, Ra Ra Riot, Freelance Whales and any number of other frequently name-checked indie bands—but Pepper Rabbit do it well enough to make their new album “Red Velvet Snow Ball” an entertaining diversion.
