With Hooray For Earth and Static Jacks
Oh, The Futureheads. Who killed your scene? Brooklyn, probably, where the Sunderland quartet played a spazzy, joyous and less-than-capacity set at Music Hall of Williamsburg. Back in 2004, the group packed up their four-part harmonies and Gang of Four guitar hooks (Andy Gill produced a self-titled debut) and basically set NYC on fire. Shows at Rothko and Canal Room were events. A slot opening for Franz Ferdinand at Roseland was considered a coming out of sorts. Now, nearly seven years later, the musical landscape has changed. Dramatically. Guitars don’t sound ‘angular’ no more. Brooklyn bands like Animal Collective (neo-prog), Dirty Projectors (fractured pop) and Sleigh Bells (KaBOOM!) steal headlines and iPod space. For good or for bad, the post-punk ship has sailed this fine city. Can you save it Miss Modern Age!? Regardless, The Futureheads are as confident as ever on their new album, “Chaos”; it’s out today and is as catchy and joyous as ever. It's probably not going to set the world on fire either. But we’ll always have 2004, won't we. —Matt Rodbard
