Once an outlaw renegade, with elaborate contraptions to sweep alcohol into the sewers during Prohibition raids and a wine cellar for Nixon’s secret stash, this former speakeasy is now a conservative relic. And while it continues to crack the whip on its jacket-required policy, the historic restaurant—in a landmark four-story townhouse noted for clubbiness, miniature jockey statues and the ground-floor Bar Room—still crackles with a Capote-esque air. If the worthy a la carte classics—like Berkshire pork belly confit, crab-crusted halibut and a game grill of venison, elk and bacon-wrapped wild boar—are too expensive, try the more affordable prix-fixe menu. You’ll only get a taste of chef John Greeley’s recently updated menu, but it’s the Sinatra scene that you’re here to savor, anyway.
