Coogan's Restaurant

The self-proclaimed Washington Heights equivalent of Rick's Place in "Casablanca," Coogan’s is a warm neighborhood restaurant and saloon with an Irish feel and a diverse clientele. Posters of American and Dominican politicans hang side by side, along oil paintings by Sam Garcia, a local artist with a penchant for using likenesses of local politicians and police officials in his paintings of medieval and modern street settings. The menu—as homey as the décor—offers standard comfort fare like meatloaf, burgers and steaks, with intriguing and well-made additions like rice and beans, pastelitos (flaky turnovers filled with chicken), sandwiches and fresh fish. Along with their changing roster of weekly events, Coogan’s hosts an acclaimed karaoke series on Tuesday and Saturday nights, and the popular '80s music karaoke every Thursday night at 8 p.m.
