The closing of Shopsin’s original West Village location left many New Yorkers contemplating the meaning of life. But Kenny Shopsin, who could be the grouchiest man in the entire city (in a completely appealing way, oddly), couldn’t stay idle for long. Now located at a stall in the Essex Street Market, Shopsin's is back, and the menu is as entertaining as ever. The pancake and French toast options alone are as long as most other places' entire menu. Ying-yang soup combos mix African green curry with pistachio ricotta rice. And anyone who can create salsa refried cheese is a genius by any standards. Unclear if all the rules are still in place (Shopsin’s was the one true cellphone-free zone left in the city), but what is confirmed is that Shopsin's overwhelmingly popular tortilla-and-egg dish, Blisters on my Sisters, is back.
