In a city of 9 million people, it's hard to keep an unknown spot a secret for long. Before Freemans restaurant opened, tiny Freeman Ally wasn't even on the map; now it's a LES landmark. So it's no surprise that the owners of Vinegar Hill House, two Freemans alumni, chose a little-known neighborhood to launch their intimate, charming seasonal restaurant. Vinegar Hill is nestled between the Brooklyn Navy Yard and Dumbo—blink and you just might miss it. But with comforting fare—duck rillettes, butternut squash tart—served in a charming urban-rustic dining room, this spot will likely put its stealthy hood on the culinary map. And reasonably priced entrees (almost everything is under 20 bucks) should offset the extra fare you'll incur when the cabbie gets lost in uncharted territory.
