With its handsome old-fashioned wooden bar, this charmingly rickety neighborhood institution (a tavern has been located here since 1877) is a haven if you're looking for solid, basic fare in a neighborhood better known for upscale steaks, designer fish, and sky-high prices. Up front, regulars sit around the bar, watching the game and drinking drafts. At the tables (three full rooms of them), you'll find families, couples, shoppers, singles—just about everyone who has occasion to wander through the area. The staff is outgoing and conversational, and the kitchen puts its own spin on fresh fish and chicken dishes, while classics like juicy burgers, huge salads and spicy pastas are done better than good. The bustling  weekend brunch features standouts like huevos rancheros, hazelnut French toast and Eggs Walkers (two poached eggs with smoked salmon and Hollandaise sauce on an English muffin). Live jazz caps off the weekend, every Sunday at 8 p.m.
