Hangover busters

Hey there, Drunky McHangover: When pounding 17 whiskey sours turns the following morning into head-splitting, stomach-churning agony, there is only one cure…hearty food. Get to one of these fine establishments post-haste. Oh, and HAPPY NEW YEAR! (No, we're not yelling...that's what it sounds like in your head.)

Schnack
Over in Red Hook, Alan Harding (Patois), Jim Mamary and Harry Hawk have created an homage to the hamburger and the hot dog. It's no big thing to cross the BQE, especially on Monday and Tuesday nights, when Schnack offers its $39.95 dinner for two (bottle of wine included). For the ultimate hangover crushing meal go with the brunch special (available Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. & 10 p.m. to close). $9.45 awards you the Hearty Polish (three eggs, 2 oz. Swojska, Jubilat bacon, home fries and toast) or the NYC special (three eggs scrambled with smoked salmon and red onion topped with sour cream, with a side of rye toast). Each brunch arrives with a choice of mimosa or beer and unlimited coffee. Skip the “world famous” beer shake. It’s nasty. 122 Union St., Brooklyn, 718-855-2879

Pho Bang
Pho, a hearty noodle soup, is the name of the game at this Vietnamese restaurant on the northern fringe of Chinatown. The ample portions are filling and draw crowds (especially those on tight budgets…or hungover). The fragrant soup (lemongrass and cilantro spikes the broth) is almost medicinal when it comes to recovering from a hard night out. Add in bits of tripe for additional texture. 157 Mott St. Between Grand and Broome Sts. 212-966-3797

Chip Shop
The Brooklyn Heights branch may not be the original (that honor belongs to its Park Slope cousin), but it bests the original in gastro-pub ambiance and authentic vibe. The waitstaff can be a tad slow, but then again, you're practically on the Queen's land when you walk through the front door, so what else can you expect? Thank goodness for the food—standard British/Irish pub dishes and chippie fare (chicken curry and mash, haddock and chips, fried Twinkies) comes served in heaping portions, all to be washed down with a refreshing pint of Old Speckled Hen. For those looking to rid whiskey head try the “hangover special,” which includes a full English breakfast (veggie option available), served with Bucks fizz and coffee ($12). 129 Atlantic Ave., Brooklyn, 718-855-7775

Downtown Bakery
Be it a jones-ing for authentic Mexican food, the need for a hangover remedy or a serious lack of cash, the unassuming Downtown Bakery cures all. Admittedly, the narrow, bright white space offers up little atmosphere, but you don't come here to sit down...you come here to order one of the six delicious breakfast burritos (beans, potatoes, jack cheese, eggs, chorizo? Wow), a selection of $4-5 sandwiches or some simple Mexican standards (nachos, tacos, chimichangas, pollo asado). Nothing fancy, nothing bad. 69 1st Ave at 4th St., 212-254-1757

Walkers
The staff is outgoing and conversational at this Tribeca institution. The kitchen puts its own spin on fresh fish and chicken dishes, while classics like juicy burgers, massive salads and spicy pastas are done right. The bustling weekend brunch features standouts like huevos rancheros, hazelnut French toast and Eggs Walkers (two poached eggs with smoked salmon and Hollandaise sauce on an English muffin). Live jazz caps off the weekend, every Sunday at 8 p.m. 16 N. Moore St. at Varick St., 212-941-0142

Downtown Atlantic
Brooklyn cupcake addicts have relied on Downtown Atlantic for their quick fix—the oversized versions here are soft and light, not hardened like what oft happens with Magnolia’s version. But there is more here than baked goods, including pressed sandwiches (black forest ham and Gruyere) and chopped salads. Brunch features cinnamon raisin French toast and black skillet hash, which serves as an instant hangover cure. Just remember to save room for dessert. 364 Atlantic Ave., Brooklyn, 718-852-9945
