Muddy Waters Cafe spent 13 long years in Crown Heights, until gentrification and rising rents ended their run in 2008. Now owner Ntozake Lundy is hanging her shingle out in Harlem. Lundy has a community-oriented philosophy—holding free events like book readings, live music and art shows—and hiring some of her staff from Fortune Society, an organization helping former inmates transition back into society. A sandwich-heavy food menu with ingredients supplied by local landmarks like Eli Zabar and Zaro's complement coffee from Seattle's Best and teas by Stash. Plus the free Wi-Fi will likely do as much for community-building (at least among neighborhood freelancers and job-seekers) as the vibrant events calendar.
