Anyone can order pasta, swig wine and dent their al dente. It’s something else to watch pasta cut by hand—and that’s one of Barbarini Mercato’s great allures. Owned by Claudio Marini and Stefano Barbagallo, the eatery sits beside their salivation-worthy Italian grocery/cafe, Barbarini Alimentari. While a skylight invests the dining room with a soupcon of romance, it’s being able to eyeball the making of spaghetti alla chitarra that’ll make your Duomo rise. The creative sandwiches work on you subtly—like the speck, taleggio cheese and frisse pile that’ll incite you to visit the grocery afterward, if only to fortify your rice and condiment stocks back at home.
