If luck's contagious, a lot of aspiring restaurateurs are going to want to share a straw with Christian DuCharme. The half-German, half-Italian owner of this quaint Park Slope cafe set up shop on quiet President Street less than two months after arriving in New York. "I wanted to open a cafe, but I wasn't sure where, and I walked by and saw this space [formerly Scandinavian Grace Kafe] was open. I called up the realtor and signed a lease right away." Since then, DuCharme’s been like "a little hamster in the wheel," doing most of the renovations himself—from painting to installing the kitchen—and putting together a light, Euro-style menu of sandwiches, soups and salads. Much of the baking is done in-house, with an emphasis on old world desserts like a German cheesecake, and the homemade muesli has already attracted a steady flow of regulars looking for a healthy start to the day.
