Named for Cornelius Vanderbilt, the rascally 19th-century railroad tycoon, this gastropub confirms Prospect Heights as an imbibing idyll. A joint venture of alumni from Franklin Park, Le Gamin and Soda, its leather banquettes, wood ceiling and flowing whiskeys and bourbons recall the Gilded Age, except the proletariat is actually welcome. Mixologist Somer Perez's creations, such as Vanderbilt’s Long Island “Railroad” Tea and the hooch-heavy Prohibition Cocktail, will totally tame your temperance, but keep an eye on microbrews as an alternative. In the kitchen toils Chef Michelle Hanna, formerly of Freemans, who powers up small-plate American comfort foods, including hot-sauced oyster shooters, brick-oven roasted chicken, and classic suites of meat and cheese.
