The unusual combo of two factors led Connie Lei to open Coyi Café: She and her husband are unapologetic "heavy coffee drinkers," and her husband's computer business counts many of the city's bakery wholesalers as clients. Now her 15-seat spot is serving up lattes, cappuccinos and espresso (with coffee from NYC roaster Kitten Coffee) in the former T&M Boutique space on Avenue B. While some of the big guys are trying to branch way outside their comfort zone with mixed results (smoothies and oatmeal? Come on Starbucks!), Coyi is focusing almost exclusively on pulling great shots. Besides a handful of pastries, bagels and bialys to dunk in your joe, there's a rotating soup of the day on hand. Still, don't expect a make-your-own salad bar to appear anytime soon.
