New York's bourgeoning barbecue scene seems to have the South covered—from Hill Country's Texas 'cue to Daisy May's Memphis-style ribs. But don't tell that to new South African 'cue spot Braai, in Hell's Kitchen, where "southern" takes on a whole new meaning. Owner Tanya Hira (of nearby South African wine bar Xai Xai) explains that South Africans take their grilled meats seriously—"4 p.m. means it's time to head to the evening meal," she says. Braai's version includes grilled game meats (ostrich and venison for now; more exotic fare soon) and imported African seafood like Mozambiquen prawns and Cape Town lobster grilled over wooden coals.
No roadside ‘cue shack, this sleek, modern space features top-of-the-line South African brandy—5-Star KWV—exotically flavored with litchee or arrow root. We're not sure that Braai’s wild animals will soon chase the long-reigning pork and beef from the top of the barbecue food chain, but for a little international flavor, you've come to the right place.
