East of Tompkins Square Park in Alphabet City is no longer the cold dark side of the moon, but this very casual Brazilian bistro remains a fiercely colorful and cheap eatery filled with mostly East Villagers. The menu buzzes with South American classics, like the Argentinean lomito (pork tenderloin in passion fruit sauce), the Brazilian feijoda (sausage, pork and bean stew) and moquecas bahiana (fish cooked in a clay pot with coconut oil). The vibe at Esperanto (which refers to the hopeful but little-used universal language) is loose and gritty, a dizzying combination of potent caipirnhas, live Cuban music and lazy-day ceiling fans.
