Burger lovers (snobs) on the East Coast have often taken a side on the Five Guys debate. The Washington DC-based chain with over 200 locations dotting the region (College Point and Brooklyn Heights in NYC), is famous for over-top-gimmicks—posting the town in Idaho where the fries were born; serving “regular” burgers with two patties, “little” with one). But the main point on contention is cooking restrictions, specifically all burgers come well-done, but “juicy” as one of the uniformed attendants assured us during a recent visit to BK. Well, like your grandma’s rib eye, well-done means hard and dry. Fortunately, loads of fresh (and free) condiments are available, like friend onions and quality mayo. Nobody will argue about the fries—they are memorable, cut medium thick and fried to a golden brown in peanut oil.
